Luis Torres


SHORT BIOGRAPHY
Luis Torres received a degree in telecommunication engineering from the
Telecommunication School of the
Technical University of Catalonia,
Barcelona, Spain, in 1977, and the Ph.D degree from the
University of Wyoming
USA, in 1986.
He is a Professor at the Technical University of Catalonia where he teaches
Telecommunication Systems and Advanced Video Coding courses. He has been
responsible of many national and international projects in image and video
coding applications, face recognition, video indexing and MPEG-4 and MPEG-7
standardization activities. His main interests are image and video coding, image
and video analysis and face recognition. Luis Torres has served in technical
conference committees and as a reviewer in many international journals. He has
also served as coding expert for the European Commission evaluating technical
proposals and designing research european programs. He was a Visiting Professor
at Purdue University, USA, during the first semester of 2002. He has published
more than 130 papers in journals and conferences and has edited along with
Murat
Kunt
the book "Video Coding: The Second Generation Approach", January 1996.
Luis Torres is a Senior Member of the IEEE, past vice-chair of the IEEE Image
and Multidimensional Signal Processing Technical Committee (2004 – 2005) and
past member of the IEEE Signal Processing Society Conference Board committee
(1999 – 2004). He has served as Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on
Image Processing (1999 – 2003) and is Associate Editor of the Journal of
Electronic Imaging since 2005. He has been the General Chair of ICIP,
International Conference on Image Processing,
held in
Barcelona, September 2003 and Co-Chair of the Special Sessions program of ICIP
2005 held in Genoa, September 2005. Luis Torres is a
2006 Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Signal Processing Society.
