BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF MAIN RESEARCH ACTIVITIES

Dr. Riba received the BSc/MSc degrees in telecommunications engineering from the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), Barcelona, Spain, in 1992. In 1992, he entered the Department of Signal Theory and Communications (TSC) and the Signal Processing and Communications Group (SPC), starting his professional career as Assistant Professor and Research Assistant in the areas of statistical signal processing, digital communications, array processing and digital synchronization. In 1997 he received the PhD degree in telecommunications engineering from the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), Barcelona, Spain (Cum Laude). In 1998 he was promoted to Associate Professor. From 1992, he has been involved in several signal processing research and development projects in the framework of the European Space Agency and IST research programs. In 2001 he started his activity on the area of wireless location within the IST project EMILY, being the principal investigator.

Dr. Riba has teaching experience since 1992 in the areas of: Analog Communications, Digital Communications (theory and laboratory), Filter Design and Signal Processing. Doctorate teaching experience since 1998 in the areas of: Advanced Signal Processing and Stochastic Processes, in the Doctorate Program of the Department of Signal Theory and Communications (TSC). Dr. Riba took the responsibility in 2004 of entirely developing and teaching the contents of the course of "Stochastic Processes", in the framework of the European Master of Research on Information Technologies (MERIT), focusing it on those aspects closely related with the statistical signal processing field. Dr. Riba has been the director and supervisor of two Ph.D. thesis: "Efficient Multipath Mitigation in Navigation Systems" (published in 2004) and "Signal Processing for Wireless Location" (published in 2006).

Dr. Riba has research experience from 1992 in the areas of: Beamforming, Array Processing, Digital Synchronization, Communications and Wireless Location. On these areas, Dr. Riba has published one book chapter, five papers in international periodic journals and about forty papers in international conferences. His work is cited by other authors on the field in one book, and in about ten journal papers. Dr. Riba has also developed team-leader experience: He has been involved in six national scientific projects, two European IST projects, five R+D projects with the European Space Agency and three R+D projects with the national industry. He has been the scientific team-leader and manager responsible for his university of the following projects: one international project funded by the European Community within the V framework on Information Society Technology (IST) (from 2001 to 2005); two projects funded by the European Space Agency (from 2000 to 2002); and one national project (2005) with a national enterprise. The main scientific areas on those projects have been: digital synchronization, efficient demodulator design for satellite transponders, wireless location algorithm development and efficient spread-spectrum code&phase adquisition&tracking algorithm development.

Concerning the IEEE-related activities: Dr. Riba was co-guest editor of the Signal Processing Magazine in an special issue for Signal Processing for Positioning and Navigation with Applications to Communications (2004-2005). From 1996, he is being regularly invited as a reviewer in several IEEE journals and conference papers. In 2005, he was elevated to Senior Member grade of the IEEE, and he is serving as Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing since then.
